Life in the Time of Corona.
We must all accept that there is no going back, there is only forward. And the future is totally unknown because we cannot permit it to resemble the past.
The virus has exposed the structural faults of our economic, societal, and political system, gaping inequalities, unbridled ecological disruption and pervasive political corruption are all results of unbalanced systems relying on one another to remain precariously poised. As one system destabilizes others will tumble in tandem – this is Synchronous Failure. The global system is on the verge of multiple simultaneous crisis. Intersecting energy, economic and environmental emergencies have formed a feedback loop with social political and cultural systems.
Yet this pandemic can be a blessing in disguise by massively amplifying and accelerating changes that were already underway, shifts that may have taken decades will occur in years and months. As supply chains break down communities will turn to local and regional producers for daily and basic needs, while global video connectivity will increasingly connect people all over the world. So as production goes local we will see a dramatic increase in the globalization of ideas and thought with the localization of productivity.
In the face of disaster, people rediscover that they are far stronger as a community than as isolated individuals and compassion will rise. As we recover physical and economic health, the coronavirus presents the opportunity to end inequality, create a fairer capitalism and a more just society.
